Perhaps a little late for Thanksgiving (but why limit thankfulness to one day a year?) I stumbled upon a wonderful article by Leo Babuta about focusing on gratitude as a meditation. He goes over all the benefits of a focused “gratitude session,” and ends with a wonderful prayer.

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something

For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations

Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge

Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes

They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary

Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are

also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.

This Ted Talks video really resonated with me. It addresses so many aspects of  the human condition and ties them together.

Brené Brown’s insights on the topics of shame and vulnerability have brought me back to my own meditations on the different pathways to connection. About human connection, she says,  “it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives… neurobiologically, that’s why we’re here.”

The talk is roughly 18 minutes, but worth every moment.

I just found this lovely video. In addition to having some compelling things to say about the practice of holistic healing, the rhythms and sounds of the video are quite meditative.

I recommend expanding it to full screen to view all the text. And no need to rush the reading – they allow plenty of time to take it all in.

On a recent warm day, I was standing next to a brook on my family’s 79 acre farm.  The old creek winds its way through the property and at points has big open pools and at others narrow winding turns that open again further downstream.  The rippling sound of the water falling over the rocks is settling to my normally speedy mind.  In my favorite location, the sound is a burble and is so pleasurable that I enjoy hanging my hammock there and dropping into a dreamy drowsy place while my ears tune in to the birds and the breeze and the limbs of the oak trees rubbing against each other.

On this particular day I noticed my favorite spot was quiet and the normally flowing waters were swirling in a pool of brown foam. I climbed over the rocks to the swirl and noticed that leaves and pebbles had formed a blockage.  I reached into the spring cool water and grabbed out a dozen handfuls of slimy leaves and pulled the pebbles to the side opening the flow again.  In no time, the brown water was clear again and the burble had returned.

It was very satisfying and I was struck by the similarities of our own lives.  We get stuck in places and things seem to swirl.  It just takes a curiosity, some patience, a little digging in, perhaps getting our hands a little dirty, participating in liberating what isn’t working to allow the natural flow to resume.

Recently, I’ve been craving space and quiet. I’m realizing more and more that life is very crowded by noise and information and people and too much of everything. This poem appeared in a book I read recently by Franciscan Priest Richard Rohr. His life as a contemplative may not be available for those of us navigating all the life roles we juggle, but perhaps we can start in just creating more open time and space with ourselves. I’ve just cleaned a porch of all it’s clutter and have discovered a space where I now enjoy breakfast and reading every morning to start the day. In this quiet and uncluttered space, I start to get clarity and guidance and a centered peacefulness.
