It’s reported more and more: Western medicine acknowledges the value of alternative therapies.

“Iris Otts is battling breast cancer with two weapons. Her doctor has prescribed chemotherapy, which makes her feel sick, and Reiki, which makes her feel better.”

Most often, western doctors are cautious with their acceptance. They think at best Reiki might offer a placebo effect and as long as it doesn’t interfere with clinical treatments, it will do no harm.

But little by little, we also see an honest humility in recognizing that traditional western treatments may not offer all the solutions. That alternative and holistic therapies have real value.

“I’m very excited about Reiki and acupuncture in terms of how they can be integrated into our treatment of patients with cancer,” Dr. Scalzo said.

One of the most moving things about this video is the underlying story of empowerment. A boy with leukemia, and the complications and pain associated with the treatment, is told time and again, “here this outside source will help” to no avail.

He is then, through Reiki treatment  given the insight that it is his body and his energy that have the power to heal him and to ease his pain. There is a healing force in that knowledge alone.

“I have the power to heal myself. The power is within me.”

There is never one singular way to healing, to wholeness. Learn more about the many paths to Positive Well-Being at my website. Be well.

More and more we hear about Western science recognizing the value of Eastern medicine and disciplines. Now a hospital in New Jersey has added the option of Reiki healing for its cancer patients. Here’s an excerpt from the article at

A patient undergoing chemotherapy receives a free Reiki session during treatment at Englewood Hospital’s Infusion Center courtesy of Reiki Master Practitioner Karen Lazarovic.

Not only does Reiki bring harmony to mind, body, and spirit, but the practice helps ease pain and inflammation, said Karen Lazarovic, Reiki Master Practitioner at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

“It’s very calming and restorative,” said Lazarovic. “It’s non-intrusive, which is why it’s a wonderful treatment. Nothing is entering the body except energy.”

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being.

Sessions are typically 60-90 minutes and are conducted with the client in comfortable clothing in a lying or seated position. Through a series of hands on or hands above the body positions, channels of healing are opened up and an energetic flow is restored to the body. Reiki is effective in helping virtually every known illness and works with other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
